Barriers to Education

Children are naturally hungry to learn, but face daunting barriers to attending school, especially girls. Giving without boarders works to address the roots of those impediments as a way to increase learning opportunities.

Among those barriers are hunger, lower social status, chores, early marriage, school safety and sanitation and lack of educational resources.
The effects of education crisis are:

  • Youth Employment
Over 50% of 15 to 24 year-old’s in South Africa are unemployed (World Economic Forum, 2014. Global Risk 2014).
  • Loss of Identity
With no means to gain employment and stuck in a cycle of poverty, youth become disillusioned about their future.
  • Gang Culture
Gang culture attracts unemployed youth, trapping them in a cycle of crime and violence.
  • Drug & Alcohol Abuse
With few opportunities for a better future combined with poor role models, youth are easily swayed to abuse drugs and alcohol.

BECAUSE OF THESE OBSTACLES, 52% OF LEARNERS IN SOUTH AFRICA DROP OUT OF SCHOOL, LEAVING WITHOUT ANY FORMAL EDUCATION.

The primary focus is to support students from previously disadvantaged schools with educational resources aimed at increasing their academic performance. This is achieved through a close partnership with various stakeholders such as donors, school management, the community and the students.
